Complete Umrah Guide: Step-by-Step Rituals for First-Time Pilgrims

By Sheikh Ahmad Rahman6 min read

What Is Umrah? H2

Umrah is a voluntary pilgrimage to Makkah that can be performed at any time of the year. Unlike Hajj, it is not obligatory upon every Muslim who is able — yet its reward is immense. The Prophet ﷺ said that Umrah expiates sins committed between one Umrah and the next.

For many pilgrims from the UK, Umrah is their first encounter with the Haramayn. Knowing the sequence of rituals before you land removes anxiety and lets you focus entirely on worship.

Before You Travel: The Essentials H3

  • Valid passport and visa — ensure your passport has at least six months validity.

  • Meningitis ACWY vaccination — required for Saudi visa applications from the UK.

  • Ihram garments — two white unstitched cloths for men; modest abaya for women (no face covering during Ihram).

  • Comfortable sandals — your ankles must remain exposed in Ihram.

  • Du’a book or app — memorise the Talbiyah before departure.

Step 1: Entering Ihram at the Miqat H4

Ihram is a sacred state entered at designated boundary points (Miqat). For pilgrims flying into Jeddah, the Miqat is typically Dhul-Hulayfah (Abyar Ali) for those whose permanent residence is beyond it. Most flights announce the Miqat — put on your Ihram before crossing it.

Make your intention (niyyah) for Umrah, then recite the Talbiyah:

Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharika laka labbayk…

From this moment, avoid the prohibitions of Ihram: cutting hair or nails, wearing perfume, marital relations, and hunting.

Step 2: Tawaf — Circumambulating the Kaaba

Upon reaching Masjid al-Haram, perform wudu and proceed to the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad). Begin Tawaf with the Kaaba on your left, completing seven circuits. Each circuit starts and ends at the Black Stone — kiss it if reachable without harming others, or point towards it.

During Tawaf, men perform ramal (brisk walking) in the first three circuits and uncover the right shoulder (idtiba) throughout. After Tawaf, pray two rak’ah behind Maqam Ibrahim if possible, then drink Zamzam water with intention and du’a.

Step 3: Sa’i — Walking Between Safa and Marwah

Proceed to Safa hill and recite: “Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah…” (Qur’an 2:158). Walk from Safa to Marwah seven times — going counts as one, returning as two. The distance is covered partly on an enclosed air-conditioned walkway.

Men should run between the green markers; women walk at a normal pace. Reflect on Hajar’s (AS) trust in Allah when she searched for water for Ismail (AS).

Step 4: Halq or Taqsir — Completing Umrah

Men shave the head completely (halq) — preferred — or trim at least an inch from all hair (taqsir). Women cut a fingertip-length from the end of their hair. This ends Ihram and completes your Umrah.

Practical Tips from the Ground

  • Perform Tawaf during quieter hours (after Fajr or late evening) if mobility is a concern.

  • Stay hydrated — Zamzam is freely available throughout the Haram.

  • Keep your group leader’s contact and hotel card in your pocket at all times.

  • Download the Nusuk or Tawakkalna apps if travelling independently.

After Umrah: Making the Most of Your Stay

Many pilgrims combine Umrah with Ziyarat in Makkah and Madinah. Spend time in the Haram for Tahajjud, attend lessons at the library near the Kaaba, and visit Jabal al-Noor and Jabal Thawr with a licensed guide.

May Allah accept your Umrah and return you home transformed. Ameen.

Step-by-Step Rituals for First-Time Pilgrims

The Umrah process starts with entering the state of Ihram, making the intention (Niyyah), reciting the Talbiyah, performing Tawaf around the Kaaba, completing Sa'i between Safa and Marwah, and finally trimming or shaving the hair to complete the pilgrimage.

Most pilgrims need a valid passport, an approved Umrah visa (or eligible travel permit), confirmed flight tickets, hotel bookings, and any additional documents required by Saudi authorities at the time of travel.

Essential items include Ihram clothing, comfortable walking shoes or sandals, personal hygiene products, prescribed medicines, travel documents, a prayer mat, a Quran, and a reusable water bottle. Packing light makes traveling between holy sites much easier.

The rituals of Umrah can be completed in just a few hours. However, many pilgrims choose to stay between 5 and 10 days to perform additional prayers, visit historical Islamic sites in Makkah and Madinah, and make the most of their spiritual journey.
